Polaroid

Polaroid have decided to stop making the film for their instant cameras.

This makes me sad.

Oh no. No. Nononononono. I'd post a sad face too except I'm out of film. And will never get any eeeeeeever again. (okay, I'm overreacting slightly)

I'm always hunting for cheap supplies of 600 and now I'll be priced out of the competition for it I'm sure.

Thanks, I think, for this news. *sigh*

What?! That's a bit rude! I just bought a pack actually. I had better conserve them for "special occasions". Otherwise I would make a sad face in solidarity.

That photo looks like m-m-m-m-monkey from Weebl & Bob.

If that doesn't mean anything, the name has the linkageness.

That is indeed sad news.
We will have to see what developes next (Should only take about 90 secs)

If you can get hold of a 5x4 camera, you can still use polaroid with them. They're not likely to go out of circulation any time soon 'cause they're often used for "tester" photos before shooting on film.

Admittedly they're heavier, bigger and more awkward to work with - but the end result's the same :D

Oddly, When I heard this the other day I thought of you, Dave. Very sad news. I have been enjoying seeing your polaroid photos on flicker.

I also wanted to say, my America Unchained dvd arrived here,in the States, last week. Congratulations on a job well done!

They were only ever good for making homemade porn pictures if you didn't want to take them to get developed. Digital camera's do the job better now.

Bugger, I've just had a polaroid camera for Christmas. Hmmm, perhaps I should keep it and then sell it on ebay - I could make a fortune!

Dave,I just saw your googlewhack adventure live dvd (to be honest I downloaded it, but there is no possible way I could saw it if I didnt because I live in Argentina and its not here) and really enjoy it, the story was so fun. By the way, lovely tatoo!.

The film will still be made, just not by Polaroid themselves... they're licensing it out. Makes sense, really, for the niche product it is.

Puts me in mind of another question I've been meaning to ask - Dave, have you got/looked at/heard of the Holga camera - Chinese plastic imprecision-engineering at its best? Got one for a present and quite looking forward to joining the lo-fi aesthetic...

@ Eric: No one has yet bought the licence from Polaroid so at present there is no sign that the stuff will still be manufactured beyond the end of 2009.
And yes, I know Holgagraphy.

I stand corrected. Seems unlikely that no-one will take it on though, doesn't it? There's a lot of good will towards the product, after all... but then if it doesn't translate to sales, maybe the numbers don't add up.

It's surprising how often clients on design jobs still want the white Polaroid 'frame' around photos as instant visual shorthand to signify 'this is a snapshot' though, even for kids brands where the target market has probably never seen one... might just be out-of-touch clients of course...

It's perhaps not the same as an actual Polaroid, but...

Alas, it appears to just be a mock-up.

I'm hoping the licence will be picked up...but who knows.

The film has been expensive for ages (about £1 a shot) and that must have restricted sales to a bunch of particularly committed photographers.

Maybe that's how much it cost but it's hard to believe someone wasn't capable of knocking out some cheap copies in morally dubious circumstances. It will be interesting to see what happens.

dave is this shot on the macro5 camera, if so check the flickr mail i sent, hope you get time to read it, the demise of polaroid is definitely a terrible day for us obsessive instant converts....

Gah! This is terrible news... Even more so considering I've finally gotten round to actually getting a polaroid camera! Hopefully someone will pick up the slack.
